1st Degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt | Head Instructor

Known around the gym as “Grandpa,” Professor Sidney Gills is a 1st Degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under Luiz Palhares with more than 15 years of experience in the art. Sid joined Xequemate in 2019 as a 4th Degree Relson Gracie Purple Belt under Phil Cardella and has since become an important part of the academy’s leadership and growth.

As Head Instructor for both our kids and adult programs, Sid brings a detail-oriented approach to teaching that helps students understand not only how a technique works, but why it works. He enjoys working with students at every level, from someone walking into their first BJJ class in Jacksonville to experienced competitors looking to sharpen their game.

And Professor Sid doesn’t just teach from the sidelines. He still loves to roll with the team and continues to test his Jiu-Jitsu by competing in major tournaments.

A U.S. Army Veteran and Jacksonville-area resident for more than 25 years, Sid has raised his family here and is deeply connected to the community. His experience, approachable personality, and commitment to his students embody what we want Xequemate Jiu-Jitsu in Jacksonville, FL to be: high-level instruction in a welcoming environment where teammates become family.
